This is by far the most cost effective and easy way to protect the nose of the car during track events. It's about $170.
Then I add some clear shelving paper for the headlights and maybe side view mirrors.

I can think of a few reasons
1- edges can flap in the wind and damage the paint
2- dirt and debris can get under it and damage the paint
3- it restricts air flow to the center radiators.
4- it's ugly
