I'm assuming you don't have any snap ring pliers, so take some small needle nose pliers and pry the snap ring open so that one spot can seat properly.

From the other thread someone posted the snap ring goes on the other side. I think they may be right and you have the insert installed backwards. Not 100% sure on this but I'd look into it to confirm. I don't recall seeing the snap ring on the inside by the piston like that when I've changed pads.
