Yes they're known for their NA engined RWD cars but those are from yesterday.

Look at the 1 series. It was always going to become a FWD car. Why? because it needs to satisfy customer demands in having good interior space, smaller engined and being low weight which aids in fuel efficiency.

4WD is becoming a necessity rather than a need. How does one put down north of 500Hp down to the road efficiently. You can see why the head of M was taken from Audi.

You either change and adapt with with the times or you sink.
Don't forget about how much space opens up when you have a FWD car and the fuel efficiency benefits.
Audi is the master of boring handling with a far superior interior to the bmw. Why would I buy an AWD slush box M3 when I can get an RS5 ? Looks better and better interior.

Because it has a BMW badge ?

AWD only matters if bmw plays the peak power race game. If they focus on power to weight and handling over AWD. AWD does nothing except add weight, introduce understeer and impair handling.
