You mean the same BMW engineers who designed the E46 M3 (or our E9x M3) rod bearings?
Sarcasm aside, why subject the crank to unnecessary lateral load on a cold start if there's no absolute necessity? I'm an engineer, and I wanted a clean solution to disable the clutch interlock, so figuring it out was satisfying to me in and of itself I guess.
