Failing AC compressor...

So I finished installing (SS) brakelines and brake flush the other day. Put the car back on the ground, and started it up. Immediately I hear an engine knock, mind starts freaking out, heavy breathing, shuts car off...

Tried again, knowing the risks, and car started back up with no issues. No CEL, car runs fine. Because I'm neurotic, went ahead and changed the oil filter and oil, no metal specks seen, seems okay. Mind you that rod bearings were replaced at 70k with WPC treated bearings.

After watching numerous videos and reading numerous posts, I've concluded that my bearings are likely fine and the culprit is likely AC compressor. I've ordered a refurbished one that will be here next week.

My M3 is my DD, so my question is: is it safe for me to drive with the ac compressor knocking the way it is? Can I temporarily remove the belt and drive the car? If so, I assume I'd lose power steering since the ac and power steering appears to be in same drive system (correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks for the help guys.
