I understand the desire to protect the cooler and I can't see that mesh making a huge difference in flow, especially once you're up at 100mph or whatever.
To play devil's advocate: wasn't BMW concerned with debris heading in there? Don't you think they would've tested for that, and if necessary, placed a grille or guard in there?
