I have the best of both worlds. I have an M3 for fun weekend drives and track use. I got a B8.5 A4 for every day driving and long drives.
My A4 has the S Line, Sport package so the only real difference between it and the S4 is that it has a different engine and an open rear differential. The interior on the Audi is way better than the M3. It is a very relaxing place to be while offering a very solid German driving feel. But it doesn't corner like the M3 and it isn't a very willing dance partner on twisty roads. I would not want to drive the A4 on track.
