Just to close on the "smokes an M3 on the track" statement...
Randy P turned a 1:44.22 at Laguna in the CTR. Compared to a 1:42.96 he did almost 10 years ago in the E92 M3. If you consider that the CTR is on modern tires, it's more fair to say the M3 smoked the CTR.
That said, it's an impressive lap time. I've seen HPDE lap times of around 1:42 with a CTR that has a tune (+50 or so HP) and R-comps on YouTube so with a bit of tinkering, it can get pretty close.
BTW, the new M5 ran in the 1:39's. Not bad for a 4000lb car.
