"Exposing right", shooting RAW and using a good conversion software are three elements to making your pictures "pop" without unnatural effects, like cartoonish HDR, oversaturation and other cheap tricks. When people see natural colors, great detail, realistic contrast, they "see" the difference, but don't know what's difference. They just know it's "better" and say so.
