UK (before leaving in 2010) SD's are legal to own and use, though they mainly detected supermarket auto doors, and front facing speed cameras, but usually way to late if your really hammering it, but in my area I knew where they where.
It had a laser detector in it, I never got any alarms for that.
LD works best in a pack, because a laser is NOT one thin beam of light, it is conical and can bounce and split, so if you pick it up in a pack, then your lucky (because) of that, however on your own and you've been had
Jammers illegal, ticket and a conviction
Canadialand SD's are illegal, and you'll get a ticket, conviction and a big fat fine, oh and device confiscated, AND yes they can tell if your using a RD/SD
Epilogue:
The SD/RD never saved my ass in the UK, and in Canada, I got a speeding ticket, about 6 years ago,

Dont speed, don't drive like a dick, you'll safe and so will me and mine
