As I understand battery registration necessity is not so much a function of the type of battery, but rather the age.

As batteries of all types age, their charging profile (voltage vs. current and temperature) changes as well. The purpose of telling the DME that you have installed a new battery is so the charging profile for a new battery is used (as a charging profile for an older battery will shorten the life of your newly installed battery), and not for the existing old battery.
