If you want to trouble shoot it. Do you have an extra harddrive around anywhere? Maybe ask a friend if they can take theirs out and plug it in really quick. If you can run apps off the new one without issue, that solves your problem. Adversely, you could also try plugging your HDD into another computer and seeing how it performs. This would tell you 100% if its the HDD or not.

Not sure I can really tell you much else without actually hearing the sound itself.

As for brand... I've been using WD for.. well ever. I never really had much issue with them. But then again I don't buy a whole lot of hard drives. I have around 3 or 4 right now. 200gb, 350gb, 750gb, and a 60gb. The 200 and 350 are internal drives but I put them into an external shell. I don't run them unless I need information off them. They run fine though, I just have them in the portable shell for the obvious portability.
