Eh I always assumed that there was a prime directive to star fleet crews which was to never interact with developing situations.
There are a lot of interesting theories about et intelligence and I personally believe that we are not the only source of life in this universe.
I also believe that most civilizations run their course and either kill themselves through war or destroy their planet...
