I am just trying to understand how the improperly torqued part is leading to a ticking sound from the engine bay. I will admit that it does sound similar to the exhaust cooling, which is due to thermal expansion. What I am having trouble with is how this particular noise is related to thermal expansion as it has to be related in some way to the rotation/vibration of the engine.

I guess if it is over-torqued, the vibration could cause the material of the plate (or whatever the part is) that is near the bolts to experience a localized stress that results in a noise similar to cooling metal.

Does anybody have schematics/drawings of this area under the motor?
