As FYI, if you have any pitting in the chrome, sandpaper works great. My chrome tips had a bit of pitting from previous owner neglect, and progressive grades of sandpaper worked great.
After a good wash and steel wool, I started off with some 400 grit sandpaer to work the metal down below the pitting. This took a little bit of elbow grease and some patience, but it worked well. Then I took some 600 grit to reduce the scratches from the 400, and then went to 1,000 grit. After the 1,000 I took a speed cone polisher and some rubbing compound and polished the tips to a nice, shiny chrome finish once again. Finished it off with some metal polish and then a coating of SiO2 and now they look like new again.

You can't sand chrome, it is plated and will disappear. The stock tips are stainless steel that can be sanded and polished and the MPE tips are titanium and can also be sanded and polished with success.
