I agree that Salt Lick's BBQ itself isn't absolutely mindblowing (though it might be for a visitor), and some places in Lockhart can do at least as well on the food aspect. But I like Salt Lick and bring visitors there because it's a nice setting in addition to having great food; you're out in hill country (and got to enjoy a fun drive to get there), the location itself is nice inside and out, and they often have live music. Lockhart is just a fairly tiny town kind of in the middle of nowhere, though I guess the fact that it still looks so historic is kind of cool.
