Yes, we got it through a third party. Had it checked out about two days before purchasing it. Only problem with the car was a leaky transmission pan but wasn't necessary for about 8-10k miles. The car was so perfect that both the technician who did the pre-purchase examination and the service manager wanted to buy it. It was really astonishing that a 10 year old M3 with only 63k miles would break without any indication. But all is good now and the car is better than ever. Can't wait for the rod bearings to go out !!
There is no way of ever knowing when a thermostat or TA's are going to go on you. Certainly bad luck as to when it happened in your case. I am surprised however that both TA's went at the same exact time though. It was most likely that one went. Hopefully no issues for another 60k Miles for you. FYI, without a picture of your car it's hard to determine if any of this actually happened
