OP - Which ones have you been to in Dallas? If you're looking for BMW or car-related community, you could also try some of the local FB groups (ex. NTBC).
I've used meetup.com a couple of times while visiting Korea, but didn't get much out of it (or at least no long term friendships) other than briefly spending some time with people my age. It does allow for you to be exposed to opportunities to meet others that you wouldn't normally, though.
