Wood is strong in compression, you shouldn't worry that it crack as it won't disintegrate. Get oak or maple if you're worried about it, but they're more $$. If you want some sort of rubber/plastic you maybe able to find larger pieces on line (McMaster Carr or US Plastic) but a local plastic supply house may have larger scraps.
