I like San Antonio -- except for the heat.
My son has been living, working, and raising a family in the area for ~20 years. Cost of living is really good there so you might have extra flexibility in terms of salary. I think the north side of town is where you want to be for better schools and neighborhoods. It's an amazingly spread out place -- two beltways! Figure on driving everywhere you want to go.
