BMW’s N54 and other motors have DI. Recently, some car makers have added secondary port injection to get some gas into the intake and onto the backs of the valves to reduce carbon and goo. I cleaned the goo and carbon from my 2008 E61 535xi motor a couple of years ago and was amazed by how much there was. It had to be reducing the intake flow.
