Background info, I just bought an '08 M3 with 54k miles. Rod bearings supposedly done. No prior analysis, so I'm going to start a baseline with this. Thanks in advance.

The motor is spec'd for 10w60. There's not a ton of difference between the various 10w60s out there so my advice would be to just get whichever is cheapest or easiest.
Nothing wrong with the Red Line, either. Whether or not you're okay with running a "non-approved" viscosity is up to you. Plenty of people have run 0w40 and other viscosities.
