There's a kernel of truth in every joke, including stancified stretched tires.

If you can only fit a 23" tall 205 under the car, but you can fit a 9" wheel, the 9" wheel will in general give you better performance than an 8" wheel than a 7" wheel. Sidewall is asked to do less of the work of just keeping the tire shape, you can run lower pressure which puts more rubber on the road...yada

Soooo for places where you're limited in tire but not wheel size for some reason, a wider wheel makes the same tire work better, all things being equal until you're in the range of +1-1.5" more wheel width than section width

For instance, if I was running in SCCA STU, which IIRC still limits RWD cars to 285 section width but doesn't limit wheel width, I'd try to get an 11 under my 285's.

But rim protection is a real thing and curbing wheels sucks ass so I'd stick with a 10 for a street car
