In my car at least if I change the rear vents to cool air I can notice the difference on the transmission tunnel... ie. it is no longer hot to the touch. Would be interested to see if the same holds for you. If I remember correctly my previous E90 (325i) did the same thing so I was always under the impression it was a design feature/flaw.
