Not early on. It's the changes that they made to them.
The 2004/2005 EJ25 would support 425/475 indefinitely (FP Green + supporting mods), as would the trans, and clutch.
The problem was the internal changes they made to the motor starting in 2006, and idiots wanting them to be 500+ hp monsters.
The car/engine/trans was made for 425, end of that story.

That makes sense. I owned two; 08 & 11'. Blew 3 engines on OTS stg 1 Cobb. I moved to my first E92 M3 afterwards and that was that.
The Golf R really ate into the STI's market, atleast in Canada.
