For me, the deciding factor would be how you intend to make the trip. Are you planning on taking your time, seeing some sights, and allowing for flexibility in your route? Or are you more time-crunched - simply packing in the miles each day to get to your destination?

If you are doing the slower, more scenic option, M3, no question. You can cater the trip a little bit to the M3s abilities and enjoy the crap out of that car - that's what is made for! And it's extremely comfortable for long trips like this. When else would you have an opportunity like this to enjoy that car so freely?! Make an event out of it for sure!

If you are doing the quick option, don't waste all those warranty miles on the M3 for just a normal highway trip.
