Finally got it done. I think the leather misshaped the ring which is why it wasn't clipping it into place. Oh well, I took out the rest of the center console and hot glued it into place. Not going anywhere now!
Not super happy with the install, but if it bothers me enough I'll buy another shift knob and give it another go.
