I have never had problems with spacers. One additional step I take is to torque the lugs with little or no weight on them. The rear can be torqued off the ground. For the front I tighten them with impact (or as much as I can with wrench) and then I slowly lower the car until the front wheel touches the ground just enough to keep it from spinning when I torque the lugs (in my case I use studs). Then fully lower the car once everything is torqued to spec. Tom is correct on his torque spec but I typically go to 92 lbs because I use an extension on the torque wrench to clear the tire and fender for tightening.
