I am guessing the marketing folks decided that it would give the wrong impression if they were to ask those who are used to the convenience of keeping the key in their purse or pocket to put the fob in the dash on occasion. I suspect they predicted backlash on the issue. It would perhaps be like your DVR requiring you to stick the remote into it to recharge it every so often rather than just allowing you to change out the batteries. That would probably irk you that one time a month when you just want to fast forward through commercials when watching CSI.
Ironically replacing the battery is probably even less convenient for many, because who keeps spares of those around? Nevertheless, people are accustomed to trading off the need to replace batteries for the ability to be able to continue using a device immediately.
