It's definitely all about money.
And I don't see why BMWNA doesn't see there's a market for such a car here. Look at the E30 M3. From everything I've read, it was a shock to BMW that it had so much demand. It was suppose to be just a few hundred units to qualify for racing, but they ended up making it (and improving it) for years.
