OP, how about serious mods on your current 6mt like a Dinan rear diff? That should liven things up quite a bit.

I was really considering going down this heavy mod route and I actually already started, but the more I think about it, the more it just doesn't make sense. That plus the BMW tax on modding makes it insane. Anything worth while for this car cost an arm and a leg and you never get it back.
It's not like your taking a 20K car and adding 20K and be at 40K and have a pretty fun car. This car is already at 60K and then you need another 20 to make it half way more exciting. You then have to deal with non factory engineering, warranty and all kinds of other hassles. Just trying to get some performance style seats in this car already drove me up the wall.
6K for exhaust
3K for diff
6K for seats
the list goes on...
It's a crappy enthusiast hobbies type of car for modding and a only half decent sports cars. Like I mentioned before, it's too much of a compromise everywhere. BMW knows this and they know they are losing the enthusiast market, hence the need for the M1.
Oh and the diff only changes the diff ratio and not the actually gearing. However I do think this car should have come with a 4.1 from the factory. Also the diff doesn't solve the crappy gearbox. I drove a friends Ford Focus and the gear box and clutch felt better.
Sorry for the rant. I wanted to love it so bad, we just didn't click like I did with my E46 M3. I did 2 2.5K road trips to try to connect and it didn't work.
