Completely right here Robin, AWD's effect is much greater in acceleration than slowing down and thus needs experience to drive safely in the snow, the inexperienced usually learn very quickly due to a close call or suffer an accident.

Why for example a Lotus Exige driver has to explain to a AWD driver on a trackday why his car can go through a particular bend faster than a Quattro/EVO/STi whatever is another story.  |
There is no argument from me here, summer tyres will always be worse regardless of the number of driven wheels. But equally an AWD car will be far superior than a RWD car if both have winter tyres.
The Lotus argument is something entirely difference and has nothing to do with the drivetrain.
