You are talking about shiftlock, I guess. A rwd car can lock its rear wheels and get you into problems(or you can use it in your favour), in a 4wd car the experience is not that severe(...). But why should you downshift? Just tap on the (abs) brakes as powerful as possible to come to a standstill or whatever when in danger.
