I think you're fighting an uphill battle on modifying the RD pieces, but let's keep the thread on topic here as this is an AiB thread - not RD.
GP thunders will not take care of even lighting
but they give off a lot more light than the AiB solution
the AiB solution probably gives the most even light
but i think that's its only advantage
even lighting, not brightness
and of course they give off less heat, they don't produce as much light
you're basiclaly diverting all the light to the outer ring
and not giving any direct light to the inner ring

so yeah the GP thunders are not even, but they are bright and cost about $15
AiB is very even, not bright and costs $300

i think menioning RD LEDs is not taking the thread off topic
unless you don't want any comparison to competing products
