Actually, the same BMW engineers that ingeniously use a physical oil contamination sensor in the lubrication system to extend the oil change interval requirements while remaining within safe intervals. And if one reads the owner's manual, automatic transmission fluid is not lifetime, but rather 100,000-mile change intervals (for the E90 at least).
That's why it's called engineering. Mechanical engineering science, materials engineering science and chemical engineering science all improve the breed.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
