Only thing I can think is they REALLY spilled a lot of fuel into the carpets, or there is another leak somewhere else. Kind of at my wits end.

I didn't even think of the carpets, but I suppose it's possible.
I'd start sniffing around and see if you can pinpoint the source of the smell exactly.
