Why does it matter - this will be an insurance claim regardless, and insurance will cover.
If you got rear-ended - by the other driver's insurance w/o any cost to you.
If you backed into something - by your insurance, and you will be out of comprehensive deductible.
Basically, the ONLY opinion that matters is that of the insurance adjusters.
The rest is just idle speculation!
