My money would be on something happened to the rod 1st.
I’ve seen a valve take out a piston on a Subaru but it was either a valve spring or jumped timing but the valve head was embedded in the top of the combustion chamber. Maybe that doesn’t happen with this platform? Given the bore scoring on one of the cylinders it could have been hydrolocked from a bad injector. I’m just spitballing but I doubt we’ll see a thorough post mortem on that engine. It took the guy almost 2 years to figure out how to use quick jacks correctly.
