for whatever it's worth:

I completely agree with you, I love my e92 m3 DCT and M button functionality much more than my F82 M4 DCT/M buttons. The e92 starts in "S" sport mode and only requires one press on the M button to turn on my desired settings. The M4 starts in "D" depressing mode and requires me to press the M button two times (on, then confirm). What a world we live in.

For the E92, all of the European DCT software versions start in the "D" mode, whereas all of the factory USA cars start in the "S" mode. All F8x chassis worldwide start in "D"

All of the aftermarket tuners are using the European GTS or CRT versions of the DCT software as a starting point, which is why they all start in "D" mode. Then you can get into the debate of whether tuners actually make any meaningful custom changes to the factory BMW GTS/CRT files or not. Some say a lot of tuners don't do anything to the tunes and charge you hundreds of dollars for them, when you can download and install the factory GTS/CRT tunes for FREE if you know how (there are threads on it). Some say tuners actually modify the Euro GTS/CRT tunes to make them better, but you almost never see what the actual changes/details are from most tuners.
