Replacing the fuel pump is the only way to replace the fuel filter, as they are integrated. At that age and mileage, replacing it is a good idea whether the pump ends up being the problem or not. Stuck open fuel injectors leading to cylinder scoring and lost engines is hypothesized as a result of aged and disintegrating fuel filter particles heading downstream to the injectors.
