Here in the US, to tow a Miata people want a F550. In Europe people tow their track cars with a 130hp minivan and call it a day.
With a light trailer and a M3 totalling 5k lb, I don't know why you'd look elsewhere than a X5 that is rated at 7k lb.
The V8 X5 1st gen engine must be avoided at all costs. The 445hp version in the F X5 is fine. Much more low end torque, but I'd still choose the I6 for maintenance/reliability.
You said yourself, you're happy with a NA V6. With 100ftlb more stock in the X5 you're most likely set.

Haha so true... people in the US want a V8 SUV to take their kid to soccer practice and pickup groceries. If I could find a wagon with 6k towing capacity I'd be all over it!
