^^^ 100% correct.

I installed the new style directly into the fuel rail with the O-Ring and is seems to work just fine without needing the adapter. I have the little spacer but I could not see any reason for it to be installed. Semms to me it would just elevate the fuel sensor higher.

Anyone know why the little spacer needs to be there? Am I going to run into an issue by not installing it?

Don't know if it is an issue at all, but my only concern would be that without the adapter the newer one would protrude further into the line possibly causing a slight flow restriction under WOT. Theoretically that could cause a lean condition at high rpm's.
