Low power to the junction box could cause the DME to be unhappy, thus engine protection. Dying batteries do cause a whole slew of check lights as devices are starving for power. I would suspect reassembling of things didn't go smooth, like an electrical plug or partially plugged in cable. The grounding is a plausible and easily forgotten point.
