I'm thinking keep the S65 within the BMW family:
1) Plenty of E46s with S65s these days so if you want to do something a little different and stick with the stripper theme, then either an E36 M or E86 Z4 Coupe would be appropriate, as they are lighter/smaller cars.
2) E89 Z4 a la Z4 GT3 would be a cool homage, but in street form it's not a very talented chassis nor would it be a simple swap. You'd be doing it for the looks and brownie points more so than the driving experience. But this would make your build pretty much one-of-a-kind.
3) E82 1er would also be quite appropriate, kind of like Marco (ilikebmxbikes)'s build. An E82 would keep it within the same generation of cars so it would feel more "natural" and factory feeling, if done right.
4) E91 as mentioned above, there's a weight penalty, but like an E82 1er S65 swap, you'd basically be creating something that BMW should've/could've/would've from the factory.
All depends on what you're feeling going forward.

It would be a driver's car for sure. Looking for something with rock chips and some wear so I won't lose my mind over a scratch. As far as possible stripped interior, cage, etc. and not a show car...I want to drive the wheels off it. E86 would be super cool; I had thought I found one that was being done, but after reading through 6 pages came to realize the guy went MIA and project left incomplete. I came awfully close to purchasing a low mileage Z4MC before pulling the trigger on my E90. They certainly have a soft spot in my heart. Curious if just a regular E86 would be good instead of dropping the double coin for an M variant.
E82 would also be trick. I just get the feeling that it would be "too much" for the car with such a short wheelbase. I've never driven one, though, so I have no idea!
E91 would have the "cool" factor for sure, but we're considering picking up an F31, so I don't think I need two of them
And I really don't care for the E89's. If they would have made a hardtop variant, I'd probably be on board, but I also think the associated costs would run too high.

Like a number of Bangles designs, I reckon the E86 has aged really well. Saw one yesterday in sterling grey (same as my E85) and it looked terrific.

I'm a sucker for a long nose and a fat ass! My dream car since I was a kid is a '65 Shelby Daytona Coupe. Maybe I'll toss this in one of the Factory Five kits!

Well one estimate was so low it nearly shot my head off into space with how much I was boiling. The next one deemed the car a total loss. It's all over the place.
