don't worry about back pressure and exhaust scavenging unless you are touching the headers. once you get past the headers, you're pretty much done with that.
the rear section doesn't do much, but there is a big opportunity for weight savings. custom fabrication on your own isn't going to yield much weight savings over readily available offerings.
probably the best bang-for-buck exhaust for sound and weight savings is going to be from megan. on the high end (price wise) is the akra. the akra is one of the lightest.
i have the vorsteiner type 1 titanium and it weighs 17lbs. it is the lightest rear section that i know of (short of straight pipes), but they don't come up for sale quite often.
