If you hear it on a 2008 car but not a later car it is because BMW used a heavier flywheel in later cars to dampen transmission sounds. The 2008s rattle more. Also, most twin discs rattle.
I don't think there is any way to inspect the clutch other than pulling the trans. I would not do that unless I was sure I had a problem.
