I experienced that many years ago on my E46 when I replaced the original Pilot Sports (often referred to as PS1) with Toyo T1R tires (nothing "R" about them, they're just regular street tires) after people raving about them. They IMMEDIATELY ruined that car's performance: squirmy, much lower grip levels, downright dangerous in transitions -- and this was after I gave them plenty of time to scrub off mold release compound and get broken in. After about 2000 miles I ditched them and went with BFG KDW2 which instantly transformed the car back to itself.
Only other experience with Toyo was with R888 on an E36 M3 club racer -- I felt they were only 'ok' at best but only after shaving. The BFG R1 is vastly superior in every aspect.
All four cars now run Michelins for street driving (PSS, PSS, PS2ZP, PSAS3+).
