The dates are printed for inventory control purposes. I can't remember if it was Mobil or Pennzoil, but one of the big blenders actually said, "we started to specify the expiration date because people kept calling us to ask why there wasn't one."
Blackstone Labs had some fun with this by opening a vintage oil can that was something like 30+ years old, ran it through one of their employee's vehicles for a few thousand miles, and then performed their normal tests on it -- everything was fine.
So, to answer your question: you can safely use it. Even if it was 5 years old, I'd still tell you to use it.
