If the rod bearing failed during operation, the entire rotating assembly (crankshaft) is compromised. There are other types of collateral damage associated with the failure (including metal shavings, possible block or crank damage) which would require a complete rebuild of the engine. So you would not see a repair facility simply replace the defective bearing if it has failed to the point of killing the engine.
