So based on total number of cars sold, the failure rate is 0.000578947368421.

Yeah, that's AWEFUL, such a high failure rate, I mean time for a class action suit

For a 1% fail rate of all North American M3s, we would need about 570 blow engines / rod / bearing failures. I can almost guarantee that is not the number, nothing even close.

This is not an epidemic or the sky is falling. It's a high-revving performance engine and with that comes tight tolerances for abuse and manufacturing.

This hysteria over bearing failures is EXACTLY why BMW went back to turbo, less one off engines, so it didn't have to deal with people who simply fail to understand the trade-offs associated with high performance, high revving, high HP cars. Put this in with the complaints about torque based on people having no idea what "driving" a car means and why it's good to build an engine with a flat torque curve that needs to be revved to deliver power.
